Spilled a drink on your laptop? Do this first

The first five minutes decide whether it's a cheap clean or a dead board. Here's exactly what to do.

1. Turn it off and unplug it

Hold the power button until it switches off, then pull the charger out. Don’t wait to save your work. Liquid plus power is what kills the board, not the liquid on its own.

2. Tip it upside down

Open the lid as far as it goes and turn the laptop over into a tent shape so liquid drains away from the inside. Wipe off what you can with a dry cloth.

3. Don’t switch it back on to check

This is the big one. Even if it looks dry, liquid sits under chips and starts to corrode the board within hours. Turning it on to test is how a cheap clean becomes an expensive repair.

4. Skip the rice

Rice doesn’t pull liquid out from under components and leaves starch dust behind. A proper clean means opening the machine and treating the board, which is what we do.

5. Get it to us quickly

Bring it in the same day if you can. We’ll strip it, clean the board, check for damage and tell you the cost before doing anything. Diagnosis is free.
