Backup

Back up properly: the 3-2-1 rule

Drives fail, laptops get stolen and ransomware happens. A simple rule means you never lose the important stuff.

What 3-2-1 means

Keep 3 copies of anything important, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy somewhere other than your home or office.

In practice

Your computer is copy one. An external drive is copy two. A cloud backup such as OneDrive, iCloud or a dedicated backup service is copy three, and it lives off-site.

Syncing isn’t the same as backup

If you delete a file or ransomware scrambles it, a synced folder copies that mistake everywhere. A real backup keeps older versions so you can go back in time.

Test it

A backup you’ve never restored from is a guess. Every few months, try recovering a single file. If it works, you’re covered.
